These last few weeks have been challenging for families and businesses alike. Around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected daily life for virtually everyone. It’s a serious challenge that impacts nearly every industry, home care included.
Nurse Next Door has responded quickly. Like many organizations, we continue to monitor information and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and public health officials across the communities we serve. We have also established a Clinical Task Force with representation from across North America to help navigate this period with our Franchise Partners.
Through all of this, we have also learned more about who we are and the role we play in our communities. As we continue to see as great a level of interest in our franchise opportunity as ever, we wanted to share some of these learnings with those looking to start a senior care franchise.
Home is the Safest Place to Be
We’ve always strongly believed that the best place for seniors to age is in the comfort and safety of their own homes. It’s where we all want to be. Through this time, this concept of the home being the safest place to be has taken on a new and deeper meaning. Not only are our Franchise Partners helping seniors live their best life at home, they are also greatly reducing their chances of infection by keeping them out of hospitals and facilities.
Recently, in our 24/7 Care Services Center, we have seen a surge in families calling in because they’re realizing the role home care can play in ensuring the health and safety of their loved ones. Those that hadn’t considered home care before are now seeing very quickly the value our service plays in the lives of seniors and how they age. Families want their loved ones to stay at home – now more so than ever – and they are also concerned with their overall well-being. We’re educating families on the services that we provide that allow seniors to remain at home and to do so safely.

Home Care is an Essential Service
Home care truly is an essential service. As cities and countries have imposed dramatic measures around social or physical distancing, they continue to confirm the essential nature of the services we provide. This of course means home care, as a business, has a resilience to it. Whether it be in times of economic boom or times of recession, home care isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. So while other businesses across our communities have been forced to close, at least temporarily, our Franchise Partners continue to have the opportunity to build – all the while caring for clients and creating jobs for those in their community.
Of course, with this opportunity comes responsibility. When you sign up for the opportunity a home care business provides, you’re also signing up for the great responsibility it comes with. You don’t get to choose when to show up for your clients and your community. As a provider of an essential service, you have an obligation to do so – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have always looked for Franchise Partners that want a business that is equal parts profit and purpose and we’re being reminded right now about why this is. These last few weeks have meant long hours and long days for our Franchise Partners and the team at HeartQuarters. Those who step into the work and obligation required certainly can be rewarded but you need to be in it for all the right reasons.
New Paradigm for Home Care
What’s becoming clear is that when the world comes out the other side of this challenging time, home care and home care businesses will likely be in a new paradigm. Home care, which was previously seen as just one of many care options, will likely be favored as the safest and most obvious choice to care for people.
From a business perspective, recovery will take time and we’re already seeing people from across North America look for businesses that are positioned for growth. Home care’s resilience will certainly play a role as people seek businesses that can grow through difficult times. Those that might be out of work or out of business will be looking for opportunities that aren’t as vulnerable during times like these.
We’re preparing for what will be an exciting time for our industry. If you’re interested in building a business with heart, if you want to sign up for opportunity and responsibility, we want to hear from you.
